Parents are now able to register their children in next year's Virginia Beach kindergarten classes.

April 25, 2017 marked the first day of Virginia Beach kindergarten registration. Children who will be at least five years old on September 30, 2017 are allowed to enroll in next year's program. Any child who doesn't meet the cutoff will not be able to enroll in kindergarten until the following year. All new students are screened in the lead-up to the school year to see if they would benefit from additional instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics. Sometimes, these evaluations can stretch into the first two weeks of classes. This program is known as Extended Day Kindergarten. Whether a student is put into an extended day or half-day program, Virginia Beach City Public Schools emphasizes that parental involvement is crucial to their child's success.

"Parents and kindergarten teachers work together as a team to maximize learning for all students," VBCPS writes on its website. Parents looking to enroll their children in Virginia Beach kindergarten classes this fall will need to complete a number of forms. These include an enrollment form and a completed questionnaire. Parents are also asked to read through the VBCPS Kindergarten handbook prior to registering. Virginia Beach parents are also encouraged to call the Department of School Leadership at 757-263-1088 if they have any other questions.
