As the ski season approaches, there's a few things you'll need to prepare. From getting yourself in ski shape to making sure your vehicle is equipped for the mountain roads, there's a lot to think about. Of course, you can't forget to get your gear in order. After all, you can't hit the slopes without the proper equipment! In this guide, we'll go over everything you need to know about prepping your ski gear so you can have an epic season on the mountain.

Ski Gear You'll Need

Here is a basic list of gear you'll need to hit the slopes:

  • Skis or Snowboard: Obviously, you can't ski without skis, and you can't snowboard without a board! You may need to do some research to figure out which type of skis or board is right for you, as there are many different options for various preferences and skill levels.
  • Boots: Properly fitting ski or snowboard boots are super essential. They should provide support while still being comfortable for long wear.

  • Helmet: Be sure to stay safe! A helmet is so important when you ski, as it can protect your head from injuries.
  • Goggles: Protect your eyes from the wind and the blinding glare with a good pair of goggles. Make sure they fit well with your helmet. Some goggles even come with interchangeable lenses for different conditions.
  • Outerwear: This includes a snowproof jacket and pants. You may even opt for a snowsuit! I wear a brightly colored snowsuit from the brand Tipsy Elves that keeps me comfortable (and visible) on the slopes. It also has tons of pockets, which is extra convenient, as well as zippered vents by the legs and arms to adjust as needed depending on the temperature. Look for gear that's waterproof, breathable, and insulated, to keep you warm and dry.
  • Gloves: Protect your hands from the cold with a pair of insulated, waterproof gloves.
  • Base Layers: Don't overlook the importance of a good insulating and moisture-wicking base layer to help keep you warm and dry.
  • Socks: Go for a pair of ski-specific socks that wick moisture away and provide cushioning. Smartwool and LÉ BENT are popular brands for ski socks.

Don't be afraid to ask questions! Employees at ski shops are knowledgeable and can help you find gear that's suited to you and your needs. With this list in hand, you're well on your way to an awesome season on the slopes!

How to Prepare Your Gear for Day 1

Beyond simply having the gear, you'll want to make sure it's in ski-ready shape. Here are some things you should take care of before your first day out on the mountain.

  • Tune Your Skiis/Board: Getting your skis tuned up before the season starts is a great idea. This includes sharpening the edges, waxing the base, and checking for any damage or wear. You can either do this yourself if you have experience or take them to a professional at places such as REI or evo.
  • Check Your Bindings: Make sure your ski bindings are in good condition, properly adjusted, and that your DIN setting is right for you. This is vital for your safety on the mountain. Snowboarders should also check their bindings and make sure there aren't any loose bolts. If you're unsure, have a professional check them for you.
  • Inspect Your Helmet: If you've had your helmet for a while, it's a good idea to give it a thorough inspection. Look for any wear and tear or cracks, check the straps for any fraying, and make sure all buckles are in working order. Your head is important, so make sure you're doing your best to protect it!
  • Wash Your Clothing: If you haven't cleaned your ski fits since last season, it's a good time to do so. Wash and dry your ski apparel according to the manufacturer's instructions. Don't forget to empty out any pockets before tossing clothing in the washing machine!
  • Try on Your Clothes: If your body has changed in any way since last season, try on your ski apparel to make sure it still fits properly. You don't want any surprises when you're getting ready for a day on the mountain!
  • Check Your Boots: Take a close look at your boots for any signs of wear or damage. Try them on as well. If anything seems off, it's best to get them inspected and repaired by a professional.
  • Get Organized: Once you've taken care of tune-ups and other necessary prep, it's time to get organized! Make sure all of your gear and your ski pass are in one place and easily accessible before you hit the slopes. Pack up everything the night before so that in the morning, you can get up and go. You don't want to waste any time and end up stuck in that dratted ski traffic.

Keep Your Gear in Peak Condition

To ensure your gear stays in top condition throughout the season, here are some tips for maintaining it:

  • Dry Your Gear: After a long day on the slopes, make sure to properly dry your gear before storing it. This will prevent any mold or mildew from forming and keep your gear smelling fresh.
  • Store Properly: When not in use, store your ski gear in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing it in an area with high heat or humidity. It may be worth investing in a ski storage rack, too!
  • Inspect for Damage: Before each use, take a quick look at your gear for any signs of damage. If you notice anything concerning, have it inspected and repaired before hitting the slopes.
  • Keep Everything Together: Continue to keep all of your gear organized together in one place.
  • Buckle Your Boots: To prevent your boots from losing their shape, always buckle them when storing or packing.
  • Remove the Liner to Dry: After a long day of skiing, remove the inner part of your boot to let it air out and dry. This will prevent any moisture build-up and keep them in good condition.

Take Care of Your Gear, and It Will Take Care of You

Having the right ski gear is crucial for having a successful and awesome season. Taking care of your gear is equally as important. These tips will help give you a better idea of what gear you need and how to properly prep and maintain it. Are you ready for the mountain?
