If things go as planned, slacklining in Boulder will be permitted at several parks by the end of January. Many might not know that slacklining wasn’t allowed at city parks in Boulder, except for the few people that got fined for doing so. The Parks and Recreation Department has had “an ordinance for many years related to trees that prohibits anyone from attaching anything to a tree,” said Jeff Haley the planning, design and community engagement manager for the department. The ordinance was put in place to protect the trees, but as a result has prevented slacklining. Currently the city is making revisions to the proposed rule that will let slackliners tie up on specific trees at the following parks in Boulder: Admiral Arleigh A Burke, Bear Creek, Howard Heuston, North Boulder, Martin and Melody Park. Last year, the Parks and Recreation staff worked with the slackline community in Boulder to make sure there is a rule set in place to allow slacklining. They have decided that there will be no length restriction and that the line must be no more than 4 feet off the ground while in use. This is exciting news for Boulder slackliners. Now we just have to wait for this rule change, and Boulder parks will be open for slacklining for good.
