CHICAGO — Thunderstorms set to hit the city Sunday will give way to more severe weather and tumultuous temperature changes this week, according to the National Weather Service.

“Strong to severe” thunderstorms are forecast to blanket Chicago Sunday afternoon, potentially bringing damaging winds greater than 60 miles per hour and small hail to the area. The storm will be worse south of Chicago and in Northwest Indiana, the weather service’s forecast indicates.

Sunday’s storms should move out of the area by about 5 p.m., according to the weather service.

Chicago will not be clear of springtime storms after Sunday, however. Another round of serious storms is expected to hit the area Wednesday.

The storm’s trajectory is still unclear, but Chicago will likely see rain and high winds late Tuesday into Wednesday, according to the weather service.

Rain could also hit the area Monday and Thursday, though Thursday’s precipitation could settle south of Chicago. A dip in temperatures could mean some of the precipitation falls as snowflakes, the forecast states.

After a warm weekend, Chicago is forecast to see a high temperature of 47 degrees Monday with a low temperature below freezing. Temperatures will rebound by Wednesday, when the storms will be accompanied by highs near 72 degrees. Friday will see a high near 60 degrees with a low temperature just above freezing, according to the weather service.
