TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Whether you like to make your coffee at home or purchase it from a coffee shop, a price hike is brewing. “We are seeing market changes nationally and internationally throughout the industry with the base coffee price reaching a record high,” said Brent Piepergerdes, PT’s Coffee. Topeka-based PT’s Coffee both roasts coffee beans for sale and operates coffee shops. Piepergerdes says the increases picked up steam due to what is happening globally. “With the pandemic, with weather extremes that affect global production, droughts, and frost in Brazil,” he explained. But, issues in the U.S. are also playing a major factor. “Here, it’s just general inflation and wage increases and the cost of all good increases.” Piepergerdes says even with the spike, PT’s Coffee is able to minimize increases since they source more than 75% of their beans through direct trade. “We hope that the first thing that you notice is the quality of coffee that we are still sourcing and roasting and providing is still that at a very affordable price. We will see some price increases just on drink costs but we do anticipate this being below the national average of 11%,” he said. But, there is a bright side. He says with lower-grade coffee prices nearing those of premium specialty coffee, treating yourself is now a better value. “You’re going to get a better experience, you’re going to enjoy the coffee more and you’re going to get the expectations of quality and ethically sourced coffee from a local coffee shop,” said Piepergerdes.
