COPAKE, NY (WRGB) — The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal plane crash in the Copake area. According to the sheriff's office, the plane went down in an open field at around noon, and did not hit any structures before doing so. They said the field is "very muddy" due to the snow, making accessibility difficult. The undersheriff at the scene said only one plane was involved. Victim notifications have not yet been made. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has identified the aircraft as a Mitsubishi MU-2B, and indicated it was heading for Columbia County Airport in Hudson. The agency said six people were aboard the flight. Anyone who has footage showing the crash is asked to contact the sheriff's office. Members of the FAA are at the scene, as are Copake Fire Department and Rescue Squad, and both the state police and the coroner have both been there. Members of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected Sunday. NTSB will lead the investigation. Two Towns Road is closed to traffic at this time. Matt Murell, chairman of the Columbia County Board of Supervisors, sent the following statement: "I do not have any details of what caused the incident, anytime there is a loss of life it is terrible. I'm sorry for those who lost their lives and their families and friends."
