KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Jurors convicted a former Kansas City police officer who ran an anti-crime charity of fraud.

Jurors found Aaron Wayne McKie , 47, guilty of nine counts of wire fraud and one count of money laundering.

Court documents show McKie spent more than $200,000 in donations for his own personal expenses.

McKie worked for the police department for 24 years. During part of that time he worked in the department’s Crime Free Multi-Housing section.

McKie was convicted of taking money from Mid-America Crime Free, Inc. The nonprofit claimed to provide training to people in the rental housing industry. It also said it worked to promote anti-crime programs.

Evidence provided during McKie’s federal trial indicated that the former police officer schemed and defrauded the nonprofit and its donors. Prosecutors said the theft happened from July 2009 to Oct. 2023.

Individuals and businesses donated more than $380,000 to the anti-crime nonprofit. Prosecutors said McKie spent at least $200,000 of the donations on himself.

McKie faces up to 20 years in federal prison without parole on each of the 10 counts when he is sentenced.
