FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) - The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fined Fort Wainwright over $233,300 Thursday for multiple hazardous waste violations.

The EPA says during a routine inspection in August 2021, inspectors found several violations of the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act and was operating as an unpermitted hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facility.

The material included solvents, paints, anti-corrosives, adhesives, lubricants, sealants, lead-contaminated antifreeze, and used oil, according to the EPA.

Inspectors also found many hazardous material was improperly stored and containers were left open or were stored on-site longer than allowed.

The EPA clarified that there is no expected impact to those living nearby.

Fort Wainwright reached a settlement with the EPA and agreed to pay the fine and take steps to resolve the violations.
