LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Today’s Good Question is: Why is it called the Super Bowl?

Like a lot of football news recently, this involves the Kansas City Chiefs.

What came to be known as the Super Bowl was first called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. In 1966, the NFL and the American Football League came to an agreement to have their best teams play.

The first of those games was held in 1967.

While discussing the location, the owner of the Chiefs, Lamar Hunt, referred to it as the Super Bowl. He would later say he was probably inspired by his kids’ toy, a super ball from Whammo.

There are other reports that some sports media members had already used the term, and Hunt just amplified it. But his version is the most popular one.

It wasn’t until the third of those games, in 1967, that the name Super Bowl really stuck, and it’s been used since then.
