Huntsville Animal Services says they're waiving adoption fees on adult dogs to help bring capacity back to normal levels. Huntsville Animal Services says they're under a state of emergency as the center hits max capacity. Adoption fees will be waived for their adult dogs through Monday, Oct. 28. The waived adoptions are a last ditch effort to avoid euthanasia. Huntsville Animal Services says more dogs are coming into the shelter than going out. Anywhere from 10 to 20 dogs come in daily and staff says they can't keep up. Huntsville Animal Services says they try to only euthanize animals for medical reasons but if the boom of incoming animals continue, they'll have no choice but to put dogs down. “We have to look out for animal welfare and if we cannot properly care for the animals in our shelter, we’re going to have to look at euthanasia as a last resort,” said veterinarian Dr. Melissa Horne. Huntsville Animal Services says they're hoping that by waiving adult dog adoption fees they can help restore their facility to normal levels. With more than 100 dogs currently in the shelter, the staff says the conditions are unsafe for the animals. “It’s heartbreaking to have to euthanize healthy animals because they’re deteriorating in a kennel," said Horne, "but we have to make the correct decision for the animal because it’s not humane to allow them to suffer in a kennel.” Huntsville Animal Services will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The emergency promotion runs through Monday afternoon. Walk-ins are encouraged.
