Does it seem unusually windy to you in Kansas City? I have received several comments and questions about the wind recently and wanted to answer WHY it has been so windy across our region in the last few weeks.

First, we need to look at climatology. Historically in Kansas City, March and April have the highest average wind speed by month. So springtime is typically blustery here across the Plains. That is primarily because of the strong storm systems that develop between the retreating cold air to our north and the surging warm air from our south. The storms try to reach equilibrium by pulling high pressure air towards low pressure air. As that massive amount of air is moved, strong wind gusts are created!

Recent springs have been unusually wind though. 2022 and 2024 had the most number of wind days, defined as gusts over 40 MPH. Both years March/April/May had 20 such days! This March is also tied for the 2nd windiest March (so far) on record, with 1988 holding the windiest March top spot.

More wind gusts are expected this week, with the strongest coming Friday. Wind gusts will reach up to 40 MPH which will pull in moisture used to fuel weekend rain and storms. Get the timing of those in our latest FOX4 Weather Forecast .
