TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A jury has found a Topeka man guilty of attempted first-degree murder in a 2019 robbery-stabbing incident at a Kwik Shop.

Anthony R. Downing has been convicted of attempted murder in the first degree, premeditated (Level 1 Felony) and criminal possession of a weapon (Level 8 Felony).

The incident happened on May 8, 2019, at the Kwik Shop on the corner of SW 17th St. and SW Topeka Blvd.

The victim was a Kwik Shop clerk who suffered what were previously reported as life-threatening stab wounds. They were taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Downing was revealed as a suspect following an investigation, and was formally charged with the crimes in May 2019.

Sentencing will be May 9, 2025.

A man charged with stabbing a convenience store clerk in May was ordered Monday to undergo a competency hearing at the Larned State Hospital.

After a brief investigation and interviews with nearby witnesses, police located the suspect, who they later identified as Anthony Ryan Downing, 33, of Topeka.
