HAMPTON, Va. — Four people were injured and all 20 residents were displaced in a large-scale condo fire in Hampton Friday afternoon, according to the Hampton Division of Fire & Rescue.

The fire started in a six-unit condo community near Island Cove Court around 12:26 p.m., according to Hampton Battalion Chief Anthony Chittum.

When crews arrived to the two-alarm blaze, heavy smoke could be seen from the front of the building while heavy fire could be seen from the back. Being on the waterfront, the fire advanced quickly due to the strong winds.

During the initial response, part of the roof collapsed as well as part of the structure of the building. It took three hours, but the fire was declared out by 3:38 p.m.

Crews will continue to remain on scene in order to monitor hot spots and to "apply a special foam to limit rekindling" as well as salvaging belongings, Hampton Fire said. The Fire Division's Technical Rescue Team is ensuring more of the structure does not collapse, which will aid investigators in determining the cause of the fire.

Two residents were taken to the hospital, with one of them being rescued by fire crews. Two firefighters were also taken to the hospital.

While all of the residents will be displaced, Hampton Fire Division said 12 of them have requested assistance from the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though Chittum told 13News Now that foul play could likely be ruled out.
