Maryland men’s basketball star Derik Queen will enter the 2025 NBA Draft, he announced on “SportsCenter” with Scott Van Pelt following the women’s Final Four on April 4.

Queen, 20, averaged 16.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game as a freshman in 2024-25, becoming the focal point of a starting unit nicknamed the “Crab Five.” The 6-foot-10, 246-pound big man also authored one of the best moments in recent Maryland history, hitting a buzzer-beater to defeat Colorado State, 72-71, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

“First, I’d like to give glory to God for guiding me and blessing me for the opportunity to pursue my dreams,” Queen told Van Pelt. “I’d like to thank my mom for the unconditional love and being there every step of the way. I’d like to thank … my inner circle for being there and helping me and supporting me through it all. I’d like to thank my Montverde coaches and then I’d like to thank [Kevin] Willard and the Maryland coaches. With that being said, I’m proud to say that I’m entering the 2025 NBA Draft.”

A native of Baltimore, Queen is currently projected to be a lottery pick. He will become the first Terp drafted since Aaron Wiggins in 2021 and the first taken in the first round since Jalen Smith in 2020.

The NBA Draft Combine will take place from May 11-18. The NBA Draft Lottery will take place on May 12. The NBA Draft itself will take place from June 25-26.
