CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Although today’s rainfall didn’t amount to much, it was the most significant since late August, a welcome sight for many. The dry stretch we’ve been experiencing has finally broken, though briefly. As drying conditions begin to take hold, temperatures across the state are moving into the 70s this afternoon, providing a pleasant day for outdoor activities. However, the respite may not last long. A more widespread rain event is set to develop Thursday night and into early Friday morning, bringing moderate rainfall amounts to the region. Some locations could receive up to 0.50 inches of rain, a healthy dose for areas that have been parched over the last few weeks. This upcoming system will be followed by a cooler weekend, perfect for enjoying fall festivities or spending time outside in the crisp air. Highs are expected to stay below average, providing a true autumn feel. However, the cooler conditions won’t stick around for too long. As we move into early next week, warmer temperatures will make a comeback, pushing highs once again into comfortable ranges. This warming trend sets the stage for another round of rain by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. While these upcoming rain chances are not expected to bring excessive amounts of moisture, they should help alleviate some of the ongoing dryness that has persisted across the state. With the fall season in full swing, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared for fluctuating conditions. From cooler, crisp days to brief warm-ups, fall in the Midwest is known for its variety, and the week ahead will be no different. With rain chances returning midweek, we’ll be closely monitoring for any changes or increases in precipitation as we edge closer to November.
