PORTAGE COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) - Following a Facebook post made to Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski’s personal page, the Ohio Attorney General and Bureau of Criminal Investigation are reporting more than 60 individual complaints were made of voter intimidation.

The complaints were all made following the post , which called for voters to mark down addresses of those with “the Flip-Flopping, Laughing Hyena”, alluding to Democratic Presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris.

Sheriff Zuchowski would release a statement following the backlash, saying he had a “first amendment right” to make those comments.

The first amendment also protects against voter intimidation, which can be a felony if found guilty.

“Whoever intimidates, threatens, coerces, or attempts to intimidate, threaten, or coerce, any other person for the purpose of interfering with the right of such other person to vote or to vote as he may choose, or of causing such other person to vote for, or not to vote for, any candidate for the office of President, Vice President, Presidential elector, Member of the Senate, Member of the House of Representatives, Delegate from the District of Columbia, or Resident Commissioner, at any election held solely or in part for the purpose of electing such candidate, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.”

In the complaints, many reported that the post led to a comment section where addresses were posted, listing a home that had a Harris/Walz sign in the yard.

Other complaints included people saying the post “Has made me feel unsafe in my home of 24 years”, with one saying they have “never felt less protected”.

Of the more than 60 complaints, 15 were from out-of-state voters.

19 News reached out to Sheriff Zuchowski for comment and have yet to hear back.
