TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Incumbents in the state House and Senate ran the table on election night in northwest Ohio, but two House districts will have new representatives starting next year. Republican Ty Mathews of Findlay unseated three-term incumbent Rep. Jon Cross in the March primary. That cleared the path for him to win this week and represent the 83rd House District, which heavily favors Republicans. It covers Hancock, Hardin and northern Logan counties. “It was such a blessing to be able to be in this position to be able to run,” Mathews said. “I’m very glad that voters in both elections chose me and put their confidence in me to represent them.” Mathews serves as a US Army Infantry Officer and previously worked in the Ohio Treasurer’s office. He turns 30 in January and will be among the youngest lawmakers in Columbus. “I think it’s a new and innovative way of thinking,” he said of younger representation in the statehouse. “It’s a fresh way of looking at the current problem sets that we have.” He said his top goals include addressing water quality issues. He also wants to work to attract military and defense investments to northwest Ohio. Lucas County is also getting a new face in the statehouse in Democrat Erika White, a local union leader and community advocate. She won her election to represent the 41st District, which covers part of Toledo, Maumee, Holland and Springfield Township. “We’re focused on making things better and making things better means to focus on things that everyone can agree on,” White said. Though Republicans have a majority in the House, White said she looks forward to working across the aisle to support workers, local farmers, UTMC, and mental health services. “There are people who are looking for me to work hard for them,” White said. “I can’t let a ‘D’ or an ‘R’ beside a name stop me from doing what we need to get done.” They’ll be sworn into office in January for the start of their two-year terms.
