CROWNPOINT – The boys distance races for the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division IV meet will be stacked with runners from Page. Junior Symond Martin heads that list as the Sand Devils are looking to bring home several medals from one of the five division meets, which will be held at two different sites. The two-day Division IV meet is taking place at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Arizona starting on Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, the small schools meet will coincide at Deer Valley High School in Glendale, Arizona with Greyhills senior Benjamin Miera expected to contend for the Division V state title in the 1600-meter run. Martin is seeded first in both the 1600- and 3200-meter races. Of those two races, he owns the school record in the two-mile when he ran an 8:57.44 during the Arcadia (California) Invitational on Apr. 12. “It was really exciting, and I didn’t go into it nervous or anything,” Martin said of the prestigious Arcadia meet. “I went into like I was ready, and I knew that I could go sub-9. I just stuck with the pack and ran as fast as I could.” Martin is a half-second of eclipsing the school record in the mile as he completed the four-lap race in 4:12.76 during the Scottsdale Distance Classic on Apr. 5. Martin is seeded 19th in the 800 race at 2:02.88 with Jack Kemling of ALA-West Foothills leading the field with a time of 1:52.90. Martin also runs a leg in the 4×800 relay race as the Sand Devils are seeded No. 1 with a time of 8:05.60. They turned in that time during the Winslow Invitational on Apr. 25. “I’m just looking to win every race,” Martin said of his expectations for the division meet. “I just have to trust my training and keep a positive mindset. I just need to keep telling myself that I can do it.” In the 800 race, the Sand Devils will have three runners competing with sophomore Jaiden Jordan leading the pack for Page as he seeded fourth at 1:56.88 followed by sophomore Nyall Prather (2:00.86) at ninth and Martin. The Sand Devils has four runners that qualified in the 1600 headed by Martin. Prather, meanwhile, is seeded third at 4:19.96 followed by junior Desmond Goldtooth (4:35.27) and junior Maximus Reid (4:39.82). Those four runners are also entered in the 3200 with Martin as the top seed. Prather comes in third at 9:30.24, Reid at 11th at 10:04.95 and Jordan at 17th at 10:12.56. Area wide, Window Rock junior Bearren Kee, Winslow’s Juelz Stoke, Holbrook’s Ian Masayesva and Tuba City’s Garrett Fowler have earned qualifications for all three distance events. Ganado’s Levi Lee qualified in the 3200 while Chinle has Maverick Martin in the 3200 and 1600 races and Hayden Terrell in the 800. In the small school division, Valley Lutheran Benjamin Benally leads the state in the 3200 with a time of 9:29.30. Benally, who has roots in the Shiprock area, won last fall’s Division IV state cross country crown. Benally also earned qualifications in the 1600 and 800 races. St. Michael sophomore Evans Tracy and Piñon sophomore Antwan Clement are qualified for the 1600 and 3200 races. In addition to the 1600, Miera is also qualified in the 3200 and 800 races. “I hope to finish first at the division championships,” Miera said. “I also hope to qualify for the state championships this time around.” The AIA state meet will be held at Mesa Community College on May 16-17 with the top athletes regardless of division will advance to the state meet. Statewide, Miera has the 19th fastest time in the 1600-meter run.
