SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — PG&E started turning off power to customers across Shasta and Butte Counties as part of a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event Monday morning.

The PSPS event is scheduled to start between 5 and 7 a.m. on September 30 and run through 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1.

PG&E said high winds in the forecast are raising the fire danger from the Sacramento Valley and surrounding foothills to elevated North Bay terrain, forcing it to turn off power to high-risk areas to help prevent a wildfire.

Shortly after 6:00 a.m., an hour into the PSPS, only 823 customers in Shasta County and 415 in Butte County had lost power.

Grant Elementary School in West Redding was one area under warning for the PSPS; the school preemptively put students on a modified minimum day on Monday.

PG&E said restoration time may change depending on weather and equipment damage and recommends all customers plan for an extended outage. The utility says it will provide daily updates until the weather risk has passed or power has been restored.

PG&E gave a 4 pm. update on the PSPS, saying that due to improvingweather forecast models, nearly 3,000 customers across Alameda, Colusa, Contra Costa, Humboldt, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Sonoma, Tehama, and Trinity countieswere removed from the scope of Monday’s PSPS. Customers removed from the PSPS were contacted directly by PG&E, and notified of the change.

At 1:45 p.m. patrols began to assess damage, make repairs and begin preparing to restore power safely and as quickly as possible for all customers affected by this morning’s PSPS. PG&E said that all customers affected by the PSPS can expect to have their power restored by Monday evening.

PG&E said that they are continuing to follow weather conditions and that a second wave of windy weather this evening could result in power shutoffs for approximately 400 customers in Butte County who had power shut off this morning and are currently in the process of having power restored. PG&E said they would contact customers and communicate for all PSPS changes.

If you are a customer impacted by an outage, PG&E is hosting resource centers with Wi-Fi, air conditioning, bottled water, device charging, and more.
