HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Election Day is on Nov. 5. As the day quickly approaches, WYMT spoke with Anne Cizmar, a political scientist and professor at Eastern Kentucky University.

Cizmar said there are two important issues on the ballot, Amendment 1 and Amendment 2. She said voters need to be prepared before they go to the polls and look at the language for the two amendments.

“The language of the ballot will be very technical or perhaps very long and may not reflect what exactly in clear language what we would think of in a day to day human conversation level what those amendments are actually going to do,” Cizmar said.

As folks get ready to cast their ballots, some wonder how their vote will count.

Cizmar said the Electoral College is a system where citizens indirectly vote for presidential candidates.

“48 states use a winner-take-all method, but that means only one to 100 votes in that state get all the electoral for that state,” Cizmar explained. “Only Maine and Nebraska divide this up by congressional district. All the other states use this as a statewide winner-take-all method.“

Kentucky has eight electoral votes.

Cizmar said people should vote, as there are local elections on the ballots as well as the presidential race.
