PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (7News) — Federal immigration officials are once again accusing the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections of releasing a dangerous accused murderer in the country illegally in violation of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer.

In a social media post, ICE Baltimore said they arrested "Venezuelan alien & Tren de Aragua gang member Wilmer Antonio Echenique-Navarro, March 18 after PGCorrections failed to honor ICE detainer."

7News has learned Navarro was arrested last April in Prince George’s County for the murder of 40-year-old Derek Dorsey.

According to documents obtained by 7News, the murder happened on March 3, 2024, at 7613 New Hampshire Avenue. Navarro was caught on surveillance video, and a witness to the murder gave police a photo of Navarro. According to sources, Navarro confessed to the killing, saying the victim “looked at him funny.”

The sources also said Navarro was a confirmed gang member.

However, according to the office of Prince George’s County State’s attorney Aisha Braveboy, when the case came to court, there were problems.

So far, county officials said they are still looking into the case and the decision to release.

Friday morning, when asked by 7News, acting County Executive Tara Jackson would only discuss the overall jail policy with regard to ICE detainers.

Jackson said, “The policyis to release to ICE if there is a judicial warrant. So if there is a warrant there is no issue for holding for the appropriate period of time and releasing to ICE. If there is no warrant, then we are unable to do that under county law.”

This is a developing story and we will update as we learn new information.
