Matt Shaner Jr. didn’t get a hit during his junior season. He didn’t even get an at-bat. But the Heritage senior came through Thursday, driving in the walk-off RBI to give the Hawks a Saginaw Valley League baseball sweep Thursday over Grand Blanc. Heritage had plenty of seventh-inning heroics in beating Grand Blanc 5-4 in the first game and 2-1 in the second. In the opener, Heritage scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, with Trevor Selk providing the heroics. Trailing 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, Selk capped the Heritage rally with the game-winning RBI with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. Hudsen Hammond allowed four hits and struck out three in the complete-game win. Hammond and Jack Thompson had two RBIs each. Shaner, who missed his junior season because of injury, was asked to pinch hit in the bottom of the seventh in Game 2 with Heritage trailing 1-0. With the bases loaded and two outs, Shander faced a full count before drilling a two-run single to give the Hawks the walk-off win and sweep. Blake Stevens allowed four hits and two walks, striking out six in seven innings to earn the Game 2 win for the 9-10 Hawks.
Baseball
Hemlock 14-7, Nouvel 0-3: Chad Brown struck out 12 in the Game 1 shutout, improving to 6-1. Gavin Schmidt led the offense with three hits and two RBIs, while Landon Zastrow and Mitchell Radosa added two hits each. DJ Lyscas earned the win for Hemlock in the second game, striking out six. Bentley Baumer led the offense with three hits and three RBIs, while Tim Huston added two hits and three RBIs for the 16-4-1 Huskies.
Detroit Edison 9-3, Frankenmuth 3-6: Luke Purves had a hit and RBI in the Game 1 loss for Frankenmuth, with Hagan Wascher stealing two bases. Brady Frahm earned the win and split for the Eagles in Game 2, allowing one hit and one earned run, striking out six in five innings. Logan Diener led the offense with three hits and three RBIs, with Wascher scoring two runs.
Gladwin 12-2, Bullock Creek 0-12: Mason Strayer had Bullock Creek’s lone hit in the Game 1 loss, with Jaxon Flowers striking out eight in 4 2/3 innings. Palmer Richards earned the win in Game 2 for the Lancers, striking out six and allowing one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. Flowers and Caden Tate had three hits each with Tate driving in four runs. Strayer, Connor Curtis, Alex Kikta and Braden Swanson added two hits each.
Softball
Hemlock 2, Essexville Garber 1: Carley Noyes earned the win for 14-7 Hemlock, throwing a complete-game five-hitter with three strikeouts. Maddie Hall, Allison Cordingly, Lillian Martinez and Lyndsey Lyscas had hits for Hemlock, with Cordingly and Natalie McQueen scoring Hemlock’s two runs.
Bullock Creek 16-19, Gladwin 4-4: Dakota Swift struck out six in five innings, allowing one earned run in Bullock Creek’s Game 1 win. McKenzie Longstreth led the Lancers with two doubles, with Delaney Violette, Lily Coyle and Lillian Wassmann hitting one homer each. Coyle and Charlie Bass homered in the second game, with Sam Swift earning the win with two strikeouts in three innings.
St. Louis 16-19, Harrison 1-3: Halle Hoyt and Ellie Katt led the St. Louis offense with three hits in Game 1, with Brynn Saxton, Kenadie Henry and Paige Luneack adding two hits each. Luneack earned the wins in both games for the Sharks, striking out 10 in the nightcap. Katt had three hits, while Hoyt, Henry and Scottlynn Francisco added two hits each.
Boys Track
SVL Championships: Midland High claimed the Saginaw Valley League title in a conference meet Thursday at Bay City Western. The Chemics finished with 151.5 points, with Heritage third (88), Saginaw United ninth (24) and Midland Dow 10th (23.5). Maxwell Stoecker gave Midland High a pair of wins in the shot put (60-3) and discus (178-7), with Cameron Cochran adding firsts in the 800 (1:57.61) and 1,600 (4:21.91). LJ Gallihugh won the 100 (:10.93) for Midland, which claimed the 1,600 relay. Heritage’s Nicholas Coleman won the 400 and ran on the winning 800 relay, with Jase Behmlander claiming the high jump (6-4) for the Hawks.
Girls Track
SVL Championships: Bay City Western scored 127.5 points to win the Saginaw Valley League conference meet Thursday at Western, with Midland Dow second with 93 points. Heritage was fourth (82), Midland High was sixth (56) and Saginaw United 12th (2). Victoria Garces led Dow with three first places, winning the 800 (2:17.92), 1,600 (5:03.21) and 3,200 (10:57.85). Sydney Roberts gave Dow a win in the 400 (:58.38) with Gwen Thill taking first in high jump (5-2). Willow Mason starred for Heritage with wins in the 100 (:12.20) and 200 (:24.72), adding legs on Heritage’s winning 800 relay and 1,600 relay.
Girls Soccer
Frankenmuth 8, Swan Valley 0: Emma Witbrodt scored four goals with an assist, leading Frankenmuth to the Tri-Valley Conference win and a 9-2-3 record.
Bullock Creek 3, Pinconning 2: With 16 minutes left in the game, Miraya Hunter’s corner kick was deflected into the goal by the Pinconning defense, breaking a tie and giving Bullock Creek the win. Jaylin Holzinger gave the Lancers a 1-0 halftime lead on an assist from Jenna Nelson. Pinconning took a 2-1 lead in the second half before Holzinger deflected a corner kick from Hunter into the Pinconning goal. Audrie Stoltenberg made six saves to earn the win for 6-3-5 Bullock Creek.
Girls Lacrosse
Heritage 14, Grand Blanc 4: Breeghan Hamilton scored five goals with one assist in the Heritage win. Izzy Ella Sopcak added four goals, with Lily Huffman scoring three goals with two assists. Claire Starke followed with two goals. Breeghan Hamilton and Michaela Hamilton had one interception each, with Molly Baldwin making two saves.
