Scottsdale’s City Council is set to vote Tuesday on whether to shut down the city’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

The proposal cites a state law against government-mandated training programs that assign blame or judgment based on race, ethnicity or sex.

Supporters argue that hiring and promotions should be free of what they see as DEI-driven considerations. Mayor Lisa Borowsky called the proposed move a commitment to federal and state law.

The city staffs two people in the DEI office with an annual budget of roughly $700,000 to investigate discrimination complaints, handle ADA compliance efforts and more. If the ordinance is approved, another department of city government would absorb those responsibilities.
