ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest day of the year when it comes to legal sports betting, with an estimated $1.39 billion spent in the US. But Missourians hoping to put money on the big game will need to make a drive out state. “That seems like a missed opportunity to me, the biggest sporting event of the year and you’re not going to have it in time,” said Aaron Povolish who was having lunch in Downtown St. Louis. You might not be able to bet this football season in Missouri but you could be placing bets on the St. Louis Cardinals by summer. Jan Zimmerman, the chairman for the Missouri Gaming Commission said they hope to officially launch legal sports betting in the state by mid to late June. Last week they turned over the rules and regulations to the Governor’s office for review and applications for licenses are expect to go out this month. License will be available for the casinos in the state, the six sports teams as well as two untethered license for platforms like Draftkings and Fan Duel. But many in Missouri might be confused as they see ads for Draftkings or mailers for Underdog advertising that players can play now. The key is understanding the fine print. Right now, they are advertising for fantasy sports, something that’s been legal in the state. “I know it’s confusing because those ads say ‘go out and be.’ Fantasty sports is not considered a game of chance, it’s considered a game of skill,” said Zimmerman. She also points out those ads don’t necessarily mean which platforms will ultimatly be picked for Missouri. All licenses will be awarded at the same time which makes the roll out a little slower. But the initiative petition passed by voters last November gave the state a year for the rollout and they expect to launch much sooner.
