One team is looking to make history. The other is looking to redeem history. On Sunday night, the Kansas City Chiefs sealed their spot in Super Bowl 59 and opened as 1.5-point favorites against the Philadelphia Eagles. KC is aiming to do what no team has ever done before: win three Super Bowls in a row. The Eagles are looking to make good on what went wrong two years ago: beat the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

Oddsmakers expect a close game, and fans can expect a raucous clash. The total (“over/under” in casual parlance) opened at 48.5 on BetMGM and quickly jumped up to 49.5 and is up to 50 on some books, likely thanks to the public hammering the over. The game is close to a coin toss, with the Chiefs favored after being slight underdogs in the last two Super Bowls.

Since Sunday, the odds haven’t changed on BetMGM.

So, what happens when the unstoppable force of the Eagles’ “brotherly shove” meets the immovable object that is Andy Reid’s team in the playoffs? We’ll have to wait to find out, but the odds are a predictive preview for casual and avid fans alike.

The Super Bowl is 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 9, in New Orleans, broadcasting on FOX. Here are the odds and a breakdown of the matchup.

Super Bowl 59 preview

The Eagles are back in the big game for the second time in three seasons, looking to get vengeance on Patrick Mahomes’ team after losing to the Chiefs 38-35 just two Super Bowls ago. Philadelphia is playing like exactly what they are: a team hell-bent on redemption.

Despite a valiant — and at times magnificently, even ludicrously persistent — effort by the Washington Commanders, the Eagles scorched the field in a 55-23 win on Sunday. The double whammy of Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley gashed the Commanders defense. Barkley rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries, while Hurts set a new playoff record with three rushing touchdowns, on top of passing for 246 yards and, yes, another TD.

A.J. Brown, Dallas Goedert and DeVonta Smith combined for 226 receiving yards in a game that was more focused on the run. Philly’s defense, second-best in the league for the regular season, matched the offense’s pace, keeping Jayden Daniels contained for the most part and forcing three turnovers.

If any team looks ready to take on the defending champs, it’s Philly right now. They’ve won all their postseason games by 6 points or more.

This will be the Eagles’ fifth Super Bowl appearance and their second in the last three years. Their only triumph came in 2017. Philly is 13-7 against the spread overall this season.

But now, they face the final boss, the one they’ve had their sights on for two years: the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs triumphed against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night in the AFC Championship, outlasting Josh Allen and company 32-29. Mahomes ran, slid and tossed his way to victory with a standout performance from him and partner in crime Xavier Worthy. Mahomes was 18-of-26 for 245 yards and three touchdowns (one passing, two rushing). He had 11 carries for 43 yards in a game where Allen was the one hyped up for his legs.

Kareem Hunt had 17 carries for 64 yards and one touchdown on 3.8 yards per attempt. Worthy had 85 yards on six receptions and one receiving touchdown. (And one controversial call.) The KC defense looked hapless at times against the rushing power of James Cook. But ultimately, they were able to pressure Allen enough to slow Buffalo’s final drive and attempt to go ahead.

Against Barkley and Hurts, the Chiefs need to tighten up their run defense, which was eighth in the league through the regular season. Kansas City was fourth in the league in defense through the regular season and has now won 17 straight one-possession games, the most in NFL history.

The Chiefs are 8-11 against the spread this season, including playoffs.

In these playoffs, underdogs have covered the spread in seven of 12 games, and the over has hit in six. The underdog won outright in fivegames this postseason. (Hello, Washington Commanders!)

Pick: Chiefs. I think history is about to get inked in the NFL books. The numbers say don’t pick against the Chiefs in close matchups. Their defense has been the story of this season, and they have one of the best shots at slowing Saquon when they are at their best. I’m not betting against Mahomes.
