The Albuquerque Police Department released a new video on Tuesday showing a cyclist being killed in a hit-and-run last year. Scott Habermehl, 63, was biking to work at Sandia National Labs on May 29, 2024, just before 5:00 AM local time when he was hit and run over, according to APD. Albuquerque Police Department Chief Harold Medina said his department closed the case because there was initially not enough evidence to see what kind of vehicle hit Habermehl. APD reopened the case in late February when two juveniles reported seeing an Instagram video of the incident. Shortly after, APD's digital intelligence team identified the cyclist at Habermehl. APD says three people were in the car, including 13-year-old Johnathan Overbay, 15-year-old William Garcia and an unnamed 11-year-old boy.
Garcia was taken into custody on Wednesday, March 19. When asked how the kids were involved in the situation given their young age, officials responded by saying they were "runaways" and "dropouts." Overbay was arrested Monday and charged with murder. Garcia is also being charged with murder but has not been found. Officials on Tuesday encouraged him to turn himself in. The 11-year-old boy was located on Tuesday night, March 18. "These children are murderers," Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said at the press conference. "They have got to be in custody
." One of the suspects sitting in the front seat of the car also appears to hold a handgun. APD said Tuesday it has not located that gun since last year. Officials say the 11-year-old was arrested last year prior to this incident, but did not specify for what.
