COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Texas A&M center TJ Shanahan will be out for the Aggies’ Southwest Classic matchup with Arkansas this weekend. Head coach Mike Elko confirmed the change Wednesday on the Southeastern Conference coaches teleconference. Shanahan injured his leg early in the Aggies’ win over Bowling Green on Saturday and needed a cart to take him from the sidelines to the Aggie locker room. He returned to the sidelines for the second half, but did not return to the game. “We’ll kind of reevaluate next week where his status is,” Elko said of Shanahan. The freshman guard began the season third on the Aggie depth chart at center, behind season starter Mark Nabou Jr. and transfer Kolinu’u Faaiu. Nabou suffered a season-ending leg injury in the Aggies’ season-opener against Notre Dame. Faaiu went down early in the Aggies’ road win against Florida and was replaced by Shanahan, who also started A&M’s matchup against Bowling Green. After Shanahan left Saturday’s game, Faaiu came back into the position. The Aggies have a few more options to provide depth to the position behind Faaiu. Currently, freshman Ashton Funk is listed behind Faaiu at center on A&M’s depth chart. Backup left guard Kam Dewberry also took reps at center during fall camp. Behind the centers, Elko provided a little more clarity at the quarterback position heading into the Arkansas matchup, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and will broadcast on ESPN. Coach Elko said sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman has taken practice reps ‘on the side’ this week, “He’s progressing and getting better... We’re hopeful that we’re going to have him available on Saturday. [It will] Kind of be more of a game-time decision in that regard.” Weigman sustained a sprain to the AC joint in his throwing arm during the Notre Dame game and missed A&M’s last two games because of the injury. Redshirt freshman Marcel Reed took over and has notched a pair of wins. Reed recorded two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown in the two games, without any turnovers. Defensive end Shemar Stewart will be available for Saturday’s game, despite suffering a small injury during the Bowling Green game. Safety Bryce Anderson will be listed as questionable in the Aggies’ first availability report of the week. A&M’s first official availability report for the Arkansas game will be released by the SEC Wednesday around 7 p.m.
