On Tuesday, detectives arrested 20-year-old Marquez Smith of Virginia Beach following an investigation of a shooting off Sassafras Court. He has been charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

During the investigation, police said they encountered 22-year-old Malik Smith of Virginia Beach and arrested him. Malik is Marquez’s brother, police said, and he was not believed to be involved with his brother’s offenses. Malik was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police previously arrested Josiah Spann,18, of Virginia Beach for his believed involvement in the Sassafras Court shooting, which happened at an address at the Thalia Landing Apartments complex, and another shooting earlier in the day at South Budding Avenue which police previously said left a 17-year-old dead. Spann was charged with multiple felony counts, including first-degree murder and armed robbery. Police Chief Paul Neudigate said Spann used a stolen gun in both shootings.

The third shooting on April 14 was at Haygood Road. Per previous reports, five people were injured and one, the 17-year-old who has not been identified, died.

Police could not at this time confirm Marquez’s relationship with Spann, having only called both suspects of the same incident.
