BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Thousands of people across Louisiana are headed to the polls to cast their ballot during the December 7 elections.

The polls opened at 7 a.m. and will stay open until 8 p.m. As long as you are in line by 8 p.m., you will be allowed to vote.

Important races on the ballot include the East Baton Rouge Parish mayor-president’s race, more than one East Baton Rouge Metro Council race, the race for mayor and police chief in Gonzales, the race for mayor in Plaquemine, the race for mayor in Rosedale, and more.

Every voter in the state will also get to have their say on four proposed state constitutional amendments. Two of the amendments are designed to give the state legislature more time to read over and vote on bills that have to do with changes to the budget. Another amendment is about changing the way the state collects unpaid property taxes, and the last amendment has to do with increasing the number of members on the state Judiciary Commission.

Voters are encouraged to view their sample ballots ahead of time and to research where their polling place is located. In addition, you must have a driver’s license or picture ID with you that includes your legal name and signature when you go to vote.

Officials said that voters are not allowed to have any campaign paraphernalia with them at a polling place. This includes clothing, hats, signs, photos, or any kind of political advertising that advocates for or against a candidate.
