CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Two major disruptions in water service happened Wednesday in Charleston and Putnam County, both involving the same utility -- West Virginia American Water. The issue caused us WSAZ to ask, what caused the disruptions? Has there been a history of leaks on those lines? When was any work last performed on those lines? A West Virginia American Water spokesperson said she was “short staffed” and “working both of these events in real time,” writing that she was unable to get WSAZ that information Wednesday. So WSAZ turned to the West Virginia Public Service Commission. Last year, a water main break leading to a massive gas outage on Charleston’s West Side -- the same neighborhood as Wednesday’s water main break on Patrick Street. A PSC staff investigation into the gas outage found water lines on the West Side are not particularly leak prone. Staff found only a limited history of leaks and boil water advisories in the area. WSAZ found no such information for the site of Wednesday’s disruption in Putnam County. The spokeswoman said she hoped to get answers to WSAZ’s questions by Thursday.
