Say goodbye to arguably one of the most important figures on the Honey Nut Cheerios Box
General Mills announced that the Honey Nut Cheerios boxes will now be without their mascot, BuzzBee. The reason behind the change isn't to upset cereal-lovers but rather to shed light on a very important issue: pollinator populations. According to Greenpeace's Save the Bees Campaign,Honey bees — wild and domestic — perform about 80 percent of all pollination worldwide. A single bee colony can pollinate 300 million flowers each day. Grains are primarily pollinated by the wind, but fruits, nuts and vegetables are pollinated by bees. Seventy out of the top 100 human food crops — which supply about 90 percent of the world’s nutrition — are pollinated by bees."Even though many of us run screaming in the other direction when a bee lands on our shoulder, they actually help us more than we realize. Unfortunately, honey bees are disappearing fast, which poses a large issue for much of the foods we eat. That is why BuzzBee will be removed from the Honey Nut Cheerios Box. The #BringBacktheBees box will hit shelves soon without their beloved mascot. In efforts to increase pollination, General Mills will be teaming with Vesey's Seeds and planting wildflowers all over the country so that pollination can happen how it should.
Our commitment to increasing the habitat for pollinators is one way we are continuously striving to be a company that not only makes products people love, but a company that pursues creative solutions to make our world a better place for all families."Their dedication to our environment just gives us another reason to indulge in their delicious cereal! I think we can all agree that we will miss BuzzBee, but we need to #BringBacktheBees.
