People keep getting naked in Ocean City and the police keep arresting them...

A few weeks ago, we issued an Ocean City crime report detailing how indecent exposure crimes were skyrocketing in the the town. We titled the piece, "Please Stop Exposing Your Genitals." Apparently, people didn't get the message because over the past week, even more visitors have been arrested for exposing themselves in public. Hotel hallway masturbation In late July, Ocean City Police were called to a hotel on 112th Street at 3 a.m. after staff noticed a man laying on a bench in the hotel hallway "pleasuring himself." Workers were too afraid to confront him in person so they monitored the sex crime on the hotel's surveillance cameras and waited for officers to arrive. When police arrived, they found the man still lying on the hallway bench "still pleasuring himself" with his genitals fully exposed. Police identified the 32-year-old man as William Griffin, from North Potomac, Maryland. He has been charged with indecent exposure. He made it to the hotel. He made it to the hallway. But instead of just getting a room, he chose a public bench. There are no words...
Naked... surfers? Police responded to calls last week at around 7 a.m. that three individuals -- two men and one woman -- were surfing naked on the beach at 35th Street. When they arrived, a witness approached the officers and told them that he witnessed the two men and their female companion disrobe and enter the ocean completely naked. Two juveniles approached the officers and thanked them for coming, noting that they were about to call police themselves. The naked surfers had caused a crowd of 20-25 beachgoers to gather to watch their... skills. Police soon noticed exactly why they were called. Police reports indicate the officers saw 25-year-old Thomas Mathers, of Berlin, Maryland, and Harris Poletis, a 22-year-old currently living Ocean City, in the ocean 'attempting to surf' (burn) with their 'genitals fully exposed.' The two were flagged by police and ordered to exit the water. After leaving the water, police instructed the two to get dressed. Both men were apologetic and admitted they were drinking earlier in the morning before making a spur-the-moment decision to skinny dip. They had hoped to surf naked before there were too many people on the beach. Mathers admitted he was a local but Poletis is a foreign national living in Ocean City for the summer. Both confessed that they knew the beach was not a nude-beach and were arrested and charged with indecent exposure. Police reports did not indicate whether officers were able to catch up with the female suspect. In the "spectrum" of indecent exposure, skinny dipping is nowhere near pleasuring yourself on a bench. However, they were charged with the exact same crime.
Homeless man gets 60 days for urinating on the boardwalk A uniformed police patrol just happened to catch homeless man sitting on a bench and urinating in full view of the public. Police identified the suspect as 50-year-old Derrick Percifull, of no fixed address. The responding officer noted that Percifull's actions were in full view of the public and that passersby were visibly disgusted. Percifull was arrested and charged with indecent exposure and disorderly conduct. After entering police custody, the suspect requested that he be brought to the hospital. This is a tactic often used by homeless suspects in order to avoid being immediately booked into jail. Under the law and regulations, Ocean City Police had no choice but to turn Percifull over to Ocean City EMS so he could be brought to the hospital and examined. Percifull later pled guilty and was sentenced to 60-days in jail for the indecent exposure charge.
We're going to say it again: stop exposing yourself in public. That means no public masturbation, no urinating on the boardwalk, and no skinny-dipping in the ocean. Just... stop. Ocean City has enough problems, the last thing we need is more nakedness when families are just trying to enjoy the boardwalk and beach.
