So, you’ve scrounged the internet, and you’ve finally found that dream job.
The job you know you were made for and that you would absolutely excel at. The job you’re so passionate about that you could work at it for 15 hours a day and not complain.
That’s great, but you still have to apply, right? And no matter how amazing you think you would be at it, you still have to prove your amazingness to the hiring manager.
Here are five tips to get you noticed and hopefully hired for your dream job!
Make sure you actually read the job posting.
It is amazing how many people just look at the company and the title, maybe briefly skim the description, but don’t bother to actually read the whole thing. Not only will reading the whole posting closely ensure that you will actually enjoy doing the job, but it also shows the employer that you pay attention to the details. Often the description will include keywords you can use on your resume and cover letter, have special instructions for applying, and may even list the name of the person you’ll be speaking to if you get selected for an interview. Wouldn’t all these things be super-important to know and use to make yourself stand out?
Tailor your resume to the specific job.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve applied to five different roles at the same company. Each resume you submit should be unique to the job you’re applying for. This means that if you want to be a writer, including the fact that you bartended for five years is probably not necessary. But it also means knowing how to include seemingly unrelated jobs and connect them to the role you want. Let’s say you’re applying to a public relations job. Maybe it's worth it to include all your years in the service industry to demonstrate your excellent people skills.
Research the company.
Sure, this is an obvious one, but also the one people feel they can skip. If it’s just one of 100 applications you’re submitting, being able to spew off random facts about that company may not be as important. But if it’s your dream job, wouldn’t it give you a major leg up if the hiring manager saw you took the time to actually understand their company’s goals and mission? It shows you’re invested in its success. You can easily include your knowledge of the organization in the cover letter by describing how you align with the values and what you plan to contribute to growth.
Sound like an actual human.
Cover letters should, of course, be professional and written in language that shows you’re an educated individual. But just because you’re educated doesn’t mean you should sound like a robot. Can you imagine how many cover letters this hiring manager is reading a week? Most likely way too many. If it’s the job of your dreams, you want to make sure your passion shines through in every sentence. It’s perfectly all right to include your personality. In fact, it will be much appreciated and demonstrate your ability to not only be well-rounded but to fit it in with the company culture.
Stalk the hiring manager.
This one is a little bit unorthodox, but if executed correctly, can go a long way. Sometimes you can figure out who you’re dealing with because it will be mentioned on the job posting. Other times, you may have to get creative. But a little research can yield great results. Look up the staff of the organization on the website, do a LinkedIn search, maybe peruse their social media pages. If you can find the right person, send them a short, friendly message, letting them know you’ve applied and how excited you are for the opportunity. This may just be the extra touch to make you stand out amongst the rest of the applicants. And when you get called in for an interview, you can make that personal connection right away because you already did the legwork.
Applying and getting that dream job is hard (no one is denying it!), but these tips can elevate you from an average applicant submitting their resume into a seemingly black hole to the one that actually gets hired.
