Move over, Wendy's. There's a new spicy nugget in town.

One of America’s favorite menu items at McDonald’s is getting a makeover. The company announced this week that spicy chicken McNuggets are coming to U.S. restaurants in September, making it the first time in history that McDonald’s has introduced a new chicken McNugget flavor.

Spicy chicken nuggets are a popular menu item in the fast-food industry. Wendy’s removed them from stores in 2017 and brought them back last summer after fans and celebrities took to social media to beg for their return.

The spicy chicken McNugget will get its flavor from a batter made with cayenne and chili peppers. The new nuggets will come in the standard shapes (bell, bone, boot, and ball) and come with your choice of sauce. McDonald’s is also turning up the heat with a new dipping sauce, Mighty hot sauce. Made with crushed red peppers and chilis, its the "hottest" sauce to be made by the burger chain, to date.

"This is the first time we've introduced a new flavor of our classic Chicken McNuggets in the U.S. since they came to menus in 1983," said Vice President of Menu Innovation, Linda VanGosen. "As our customers have been asking for Spicy McNuggets for some time now, we couldn't think of a better time to bring them to our menus. We can't wait for McNuggets fans to get a taste of these new spicy options.”

If you need to turn down the heat on the McNuggets, try the creamy ranch sauce, tangy bbq dipping sauce or Kim K’s favorite, honey. In addition to the spicy McNuggets, McDonald’s is also introducing a new McFlurry made with Chips Ahoy!. The McFlurry will have bits of Chips Ahoy! cookie mixed with vanilla ice cream, topped with caramel sauce. Both the spicy chicken McNuggets and Chips Ahoy! McFlurry will be available for a limited time beginning on September 16, 2020.
