The new sandwich will be available for free on launch day with “insurance.”
Popeyes is adding a new sandwich to its roster, the Cajun flounder sandwich. The new sandwich comes just in time to celebrate another Louisiana tradition, Fat Tuesday. After all the success the restaurant had with its chicken sandwich last year, the company felt it was time to challenge fast food’s version of a fish sandwich. Popeyes already offers shrimp, but this is the first time a fish sandwich will be on the menu.
McDonald’s was the first fast-food restaurant to put a fish sandwich on the menu. The restaurant wanted to boost sales during the lent holiday when Catholics and Orthodox refrain from eating meat on Fridays. Lent begins the day after Fat Tuesday, the end of the raucous Mardi Gras celebration, and runs through April.
Popeyes' new fish sandwich has some of the same qualities as its chicken predecessor including the brioche bun and barrel cured pickles.
“After seeing the response to our Chicken Sandwich in 2019, we are excited to deliver yet another delicious sandwich to our fans that is sure to reset industry standards,” says Sami Siddiqui, President, Americas at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. “At Popeyes, we don’t take shortcuts on quality and strive to ensure our ingredients are the best of the best. That’s why we’re proud to be serving up the most authentic, Cajun Flounder Sandwich in QSR.”
The sandwich has a deep-fried flounder filet sprinkled with cajun seasoning and topped with tartar sauce. Popeyes is betting big that fans will love it, offering to replace it with a chicken sandwich on launch day. Just purchase the launch day insurance for 15 cents through the Popeyes app and you’ll get the option to trade your fish for chicken if you don’t like it. The new Cajun flounder sandwich launches nationwide on Thursday, February 11.
