This kid-friendly recipe will be a big hit at any Halloween party.

If you like pigs in a blanket, then you'll love these hot dog spiders. You can get really fancy and whip up a cheese sauce to go with them, or just serve them with your basic ketchup and mustard.

Recipe: Halloween Hot Dog Spiders (makes 24 spiders)

Ingredients:

  • 6 hot dogs
  • 1 tube crescent roll dough
  • Ketchup or Mustard (for making the eyes and dipping)

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Prepare a cookie sheet with foil or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Cut each hot dog in half at the midpoint and then in half again lengthwise. With the tip of a paring knife, cut 4 legs on each side, cutting only about a third of the way in. If you hold the piece of hot dog in the center with your fingertip, you should roughly keep the center third uncut.
  3. Each hot dog should make 4 spiders, so you'll need 24 total strips of crescent roll dough. lay out each of the dough triangles and cut each one into 3 bandage-like strips.
  4. Bake the spiders, seam side down, for 15 minutes. Cool for at least 10 minutes before adding ketchup or mustard dots for the eyes. Serve with ketchup or mustard for dipping.

Variations:

  • You can use any kind of hot dog (even meatless) for this recipe. Make sure you use full-sized hot dogs, as mini cocktail sausages would be too difficult to cut properly.
  • If you have them, kitchen shears can be used to cut the spider legs too.
  • Small pieces of cheese can be tucked between the back of the hot dog and the dough for a little extra surprise. Just don't add too much; you don't want it oozing out the side.
