As the city enters Phase One of reopening, diners can expect a different sort of restaurant experience.
Outdoor seating and social distancing are just two of the big changes. D.C. restaurants are eager to welcome customers back, and they're doing what it takes to do so within city guidelines.
During Phase One, only restaurants and beer gardens with outdoor seating are able to open for on-site dining. Tables will be set at least six feet apart. If you're not into eating al fresco, just stick with takeout and delivery for now.
At the restaurant, staff will have to constantly sanitize high-touch areas. You may see more paper menus for a while, as single-use items are highly encouraged. Also, those menus may be somewhat limited since restaurants have now been closed for over two months.
Some restaurants, like Equinox, are creating physical barriers to make their diners feel safer.
If you do decide to go out to eat, pack a face mask and your patience. Make a reservation if you can, as all of the city's restaurants will be limited in capacity due to the social distancing rules. Some restaurants might not have had time to update their websites yet, so check their social media accounts for updates.
