Cornerback Marcus Lewis, formerly of Florida State, announced on Twitter that he will be transferring to the University of Maryland.
The former four-star cornerback recruit Marcus Lewis has announced that he will be transferring to the University of Maryland and use his two remaining years of eligibility as a member of the Terrapins football team. Lewis will sit out the 2017 season in accordance with transfer rules set by the NCAA. Lewis is a native of Washington, D.C., and was the second highest-rated player in Washington out of the 2015 recruiting class.
Lewis is considered a versatile player who can play on special teams as well as on defense at cornerback and safety, which will be a big plus for the Terps. Last year, Lewis played in only eight games however, missing the last five games with an injury. Despite sitting out five games, Lewis still managed to rack up 21 tackles, one interception, and a fumble recovery, as well as two pass breakups. His presence in the backfield will help to keep Big Ten offenses from picking apart the Terrapin defense so that the offense can keep each game close. His personal accolades are quite extensive; in 2015, Lewis was ranked the fifth-best safety and 80th-best player overall. 247Sports ranked Lewis the 12th-best athlete in the country, while ESPN ranked the player ninth-best safety in the country as Lewis helped Washington, D.C.’s Gonzaga High School win the city championship title for the first time in 50 years.
The Terps are fortunate to have landed such a high-profile player and, as is always the case in most sports, big names tend to draw more big names. As Lewis sits out the 2017 season, he is still allowed to practice with the team while the time off will give him a chance to focus in the classroom and on his own physical condition. Practicing with the team will help him adjust to the coaches’ style of play, as well as to develop chemistry with his teammates.
