If lawmakers in Virginia have their way, Virginia could soon be home to the newly renamed Washington Commanders.

Three sites in Northern Virginia are being considered: one at Potomac Shores in Dumfries, another near Telegraph Road in Woodbridge, and a third in Sterling, in Loudoun County.

The proposed Virginia stadium would be part of an entertainment complex with hotels, restaurants, and retail options. The project would cost around $2 billion and would be financed by long-term bonds.

Back in February, the Virginia legislature passed bills in each chamber that would allow the creation of a stadium authority. The new stadium authority would be able to secure financing and build a venue suitable for a professional football team.

The Commanders are contracted to remain at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, until 2027. The 20-year-old stadium has a myriad of problems, including water leaks and structural problems. Team leadership has been scouting locations around the DMV, including Virginia and D.C. Maryland is also an option, as long as the state can provide the team with a new stadium.

Virginia lawmakers say the project would be able to host concerts and other sporting events and bring millions of dollars of revenue into the state. The project would probably be built in either Loudon or Prince William county.
