No matter what kind of guy you are, you want to make sure you look sharp -- whether it’s for your career, dating life, or just every day.

But you don’t want to wade through all the trends and continuously be changing up your shirts, right? We get it.

That’s why we created a list of five staples you should absolutely have in your wardrobe no matter the season or year.

Blazer

You may live your life without needing a three-piece suit, but we promise you that there will someday come a day when you will need a tailored blazer (if that day hasn’t come already). A blazer is one of the most versatile pieces a man can have in his wardrobe because it works for so many of life’s occasions. For work, you can style it with khaki pants and a button down. For a night out, you can pair it with your favorite jeans. But really, the possibilities are endless. Just make sure that it fits correctly, and if you’re looking to invest in something that will last you a long time, a blazer would be it.

Jeans

You’ve got jeans, of course -- but are they the right jeans? Though you may have thought you looked cool in high school with your saggy ill-fitted denim, or super-hipster and alternative with your skinny jeans in college, as an adult you need to be adding a pair of straight-leg, properly fitted jeans to your wardrobe. Jeans are one of those items you need to spend some time experimenting with at the store, so you can find a pair that fits your style and matches anything in your closet. And follow that metric: if you can’t style your jeans with any of your shirts, they’re probably not the classic staple you want.

Neutral button-down

Button-down shirts are another one of those pieces you can just wear for every facet of life (you’re sensing a pattern here, right?). The nice thing about a classic button-down is its versatility. The same neutral-colored, fitted shirt can be worn with a formal suit for an important meeting at the office, and with those new jeans and blazer you bought for a hot date. Just make sure that you’re stocked up in solid colors before you go venturing into any crazy prints or patterns.

Cotton t-shirt

The key here is that you want to make sure the t-shirt is made from cotton material. This makes it last much longer than any of that cheap fabric, and is breathable, light, and easy to wear. A cotton t-shirt is a great piece of clothing for any casual event you may have going on -- from chilling out with your friends, to heading out to an outdoor shindig. And when the weather gets colder, they’re also great to layer under that cozy sweater.

Patterned socks

Crazy-patterned socks are clearly here to stay, and they're the only staple in your wardrobe that’s allowed to be a little bit out there. And because you’ve got everything else in a tailored fit and a neutral hue, your orange polka dot socks peeking out will be a fun touch of personality in your outfits. You can go real adventurous here -- anything from a bright pink color to animal prints. Pick out a couple different selections so you can wear something new every day of the week.

Once you’ve mastered the staples, you know you can master any other thing fashion might throw at you. Because these pieces will never go out of style, you can rest assured that however you wear them and whatever you match them with, they’ll work.
