The Puttery is one of several mini-golf restaurants to open in the past year.

Another mini-golf hotspot is set to open in Washington, D.C. The Puttery, an upscale indoor mini-golf course restaurant, is taking over the old Spy Museum in Chinatown.

Instead of the traditional fake grass and plaster windmill, the Puttery will have courses decorated with modern art, psychedelic designs, and American plant life. Guests can also nosh on pizza, salads, and upscale appetizers, along with a variety of wine, beer, and cocktails.

This is the first location in the D.C. area for the Puttery, a golf company that has been expanding up and down the east coast. The 19,000-square-foot space will have three nine-hole courses, a bar and restaurant area, and several lounge spaces. During the pandemic, traditional golf grew in popularity because it was one of the few activities people could do safely. As things return to normal, businesses like the Puttery are providing a way for people to combine golf with food and drink in a climate-controlled environment.

Each course has its own unique theme and a digital scoring system that makes it easy for the group to keep track of who's winning. The modern art course includes renderings of famous pop-art designs and decor like giant soup cans. The conservatory course features plants and trees from around the U.S., including a southwest hole complete with Saguaro cacti, a redwood forest hole, and a hole with D.C.’s own signature cherry blossoms. The illusion course is filled with black and white patterns that make mini-golf challenging before the first drink and after the last.

A round of golf at Puttery costs around $18 per person and is restricted to guests 21 and over. Reservations can be made for groups of four or less and walk-ins are also accepted. No reservations are required to hang out in the bar and restaurant areas.

A formal opening date hasn’t been announced, but the Puttery is currently hiring for several positions in the front and back of the house.
