The trick-or-treat event was canceled for the past two years due to COVID-19.

The National Zoo has announced the return of one of its most popular events, “Boo at the Zoo." Put on hold for the past two years due to the pandemic, it will return for three days on October 28–30, from 5:30–8:30 p.m.

The zoo will be decorated for the holiday and guests will have the opportunity to see animals and do some trick-or-treating.

Staff at the zoo spend several days decorating the zoo with Halloween decorations, props, and lights, creating a boo-tiful atmosphere. Each guest will receive a Halloween treat bag and can pick up candy at more than 30 trick-or-treat stations in the zoo. Visitors will also get special access to several animal exhibits, including the Elephant Community Center, Small Mammal House, Great Ape House, Think Tank, and the Reptile Discovery Center.

Tickets go on sale on September 22, and are expected to sell out fast. National Zoo members will get to buy tickets early starting on September 15. Tickets are $25 for zoo members and $35 for non-members and must be purchased online before the event. Children under age two are not required to have a ticket. Parking is separate and must also be purchased online for $30 per car.

Memberships start at $74 and include entry to the zoo without a pass, discounts on food, retail and stroller rentals, and discounts on admissions to zoos and aquariums around the country.

Kids and adults are allowed to wear costumes, but adults may not wear masks or items that cover the face. Accessories that resemble weapons must be left at home.

Currently, the National Zoo is not requiring guests to provide proof of vaccination or masks, but that could change depending on the level of community spread.
