Be part of a tradition of remembrance and commemoration of loved ones.

Denver's Art District on Santa Fe, Museo de las Americas, and the Consulate General of Mexico have come together to invite you to visit the First Friday Art Walk and join the Dia de los Muertos procession.

“November 2 is a special day for everyone who holds the memory of a loved one near to their hearts. A century-old tradition becomes the embodiment of remembrance and celebration, a commemoration of the life of those who have left but are not forgotten. In the celebration of the Day of the Dead, death does not refer to an absence but to a living presence,” says the event’s website. “In the spirit of celebration, respect, and inclusion, we invite you to join the festivities.”

This holiday has roots in Mexico and often times include offerings or altars to loved ones. The celebration varies from region to region, but the common denominator is death, as a metaphor for life that materializes in the offered altar. As important to the tradition is La Catrina, the ever-present symbol of Mexican culture's celebration of Día de los Muertos. The skeleton figure can be found throughout homes and altars with offerings on her behalf. 

“November 2 celebrations for Day of the Dead are filled with flowers, lights, food, music and many colors throughout the day, in which we want to hold close the memory of our loved ones,” says the site.

Face decoration stations will be positioned throughout the Art District starting at 4 p.m. You can dress in your best Catrina attire and join the procession at 7 p.m. The festivities will also include a costume contest during. You can also enjoy the First Friday Art Walk at the various galleries on Santa Fe to kick off Denver Arts Week.
