Guests can view more than 83 pieces of clothing accessories and photographs on loan from the Palace of Monaco.

If you’re looking for a place to get out of the heat in Washington, D.C., the Hillwood Estate, Museum and Garden has an amazing collection of couture on display. A new exhibition, Grace of Monaco: Princess in Dior, opened in early June and will remain on display through January 8, 2023.

The collection includes Christian Dior clothing, accessories, and photos that belonged to Grace Kelly, an Academy-Award-winning actress and wife to Prince Rainier III of Monaco. This is the first time the exhibition is on view in the U.S.

Grace Kelly is known as a style icon and had a major influence on couture design throughout her life. A popular handbag by Hermés was renamed “The Kelly” after she was photographed wearing the bag. Kelly had a friendship with Dior’s artistic director Marc Bohan and more than one-third of her wardrobe consisted of Dior designs. In 1954, Kelly wore her first Christian Dior dress to the premiere of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window.

Christian Dior is credited with restoring the fashion industry with his “New Look” in 1947. The collection featured full skirts, structured waists, and sculpted shoulders. The New Look made its way to America in the '50s and became popular in Hollywood. The popularity of Dior is the subject of a new film called Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, the story of a cleaning lady who makes her way to France to purchase her own Dior dress.

Hillwood Estate, Museum and Garden is a former estate owned by Marjorie Merriweather Post located in Northwest D.C. The home is surrounded by 25 acres of land and the interior boasts the largest collection of Imperial Russian Art outside of Russia.

Admission to the museum is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for students, free for children under six, and includes the Grace of Monaco: Princess in Dior exhibition.
