Colorado has got to be one of the best places to take an RV.

If you live in Colorado, then you know that the massive collegiate peaks make for a great backyard vista, or that a few long sunsets over the waving wheat fields of the eastern plains can be amongst the best forms of therapy. You also know that in a day's drive you can go from the lush, forested Gunnison National Forest all the way to the arid mesas of Mesa Verde National State Park. So, for those seeking a "true Colorado experience," we want to relay what we think are a few of Colorado's best RV campgrounds.

Four Seasons RV Park -- Salida, CO

[gallery ids="17501,17508"] Located just outside the town of Salida, the Four Seasons RV Park sits right along the Arkansas River. It's just far enough out of town to enjoy the river, and just close enough to go into town to stock up. Salida also has fantastic bars and restaurants should you need a break from cooking in the rig.

Pagosa Springs RV Park -- Pagosa Springs, CO

[gallery ids="17502,17509"] We could all use a good soak in Pagosa Springs, and if that's your style, you're in luck. The Pagosa Springs RV Park is a great place to call base. Plus, every full-service RV spot comes with a picnic table, umbrella, and outdoor fire feature. Not to mention, you can rent ATVs here, too.

Mesa Verde RV Resort -- Mancos, CO

[gallery ids="17503,17510"] If you live in Colorado, you've got to visit Mesa Verde National Park at least once. It's truly unlike any other part of the state, and you'll get the chance to learn about some of Colorado's most peculiar Native American history. For more information on tours, hikes, and to help plan your trip, you can read more about it on the National Park Service website here!

Elk Creek Campground & RV Park -- Grand Lake, CO

[gallery ids="17504,17511"] Not too far from Rocky Mountain National Park and close to Grand Lake, this is a great place to view wildlife, go for a hike, or rent a boat and spend the day on the water.

Marshall Ash Village RV Park -- Stratton, CO

[gallery ids="17506,17513"] If you've just spent all day driving across the Kansas and just entered Colorado, stop by Marshall Ash Village RV Park. It's just outside the humble, hardworking farming town of Stratton, and it's conveniently close to I-70. Not to worry though -- it's not so close you can't relax, and there's even a winery right next to it! It's probably safe to say it's the best place on the plains to sip sauvignon.

Wray Hitch N' Post

[gallery ids="17507,17514"] For the person purposely looking for a place on the prairie, try the Wray Hitch N' Post. With a 2014 census reporting a population of 2,400 people, you can stock up on provisions without losing that small farm town feel. Of course, there's really no way to compete with the beauty that many national park campgrounds offer, but for the in-between trips and the need for hook-ups, water, etc., we think these places are pretty great! What are your thoughts? Do you know of any overlooked RV-friendly campgrounds that deserve a shout-out? Let us know in the comments below!

Did you know these TV shows were set in Colorado?

George Erbert
George is a Denver native who has an unapologetic love for cars, strong coffee, road trips, and -- despite his youthful appearance -- bygone eras of country music. In his free time, you'll find him carving mountain back roads in whatever car he's lent for the weekend, reading, writing, or unsuccessfully trying to replicate things shown on any of Anthony Bourdain's TV shows.
