A curious black bear caused some Friday night excitement for a family in Estes Park.

The bear found his way into a home that happened to have an open door, before following the smell of deviled eggs in the home’s trash cans. Once inside, he got himself trapped by knocking down the trash can and blocking the door, according to reports.

Determined as ever to get out, the bear began tearing through the wall, ripping out outlets, drywall, and insulation. The responding Estes Park Police officer described the hole the bear busted through like the shape of "The Kool-Aid Man," as seen in those classic commercials.

The homeowner John Sliwinski realized his error and simply overlooked closing the door after bringing the trash inside—ironically, to keep it away from bears. No one was injured in the incident, which is something to be thankful for.

Bears are no joke in Colorado this time of year and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has reminded all residents in the area to close and lock all doors to cars, homes, and outbuildings. CPW has reported a high number of similar bear break-in incidents in the area. On August 3, officials said they had responded to 44 incidents of bears getting into homes or vehicles over a 10-day stretch. Most involved unlocked doors or windows, as was the case for Friday night’s incident.

Per CPW, people in the area are reminded:

“For your safety, and the lives of these bears, PLEASE close and lock ALL windows and doors to your house and vehicles. Make it a routine to check everything is closed up before you go to bed or leave the house to do errands.

Some of these vehicles were clean of any attractants (not even a crumb), and multiple cars in the same area. This shows that some individual bears are so habituated to receiving food from vehicles that some are going car to car seeing if they are unlocked, even if they don’t see or smell food.

Please do your part to keep bears wild. Bears are extremely smart, which means we all have to be too. Sometimes it’s literally as easy as a push of a button or flick of a lock.”

Just a couple of week’s ago, we told you about this bear who tried to steal some discards from a pot dispensary in Lyons, Colorado, so clearly, the bears are on the hunt for whatever they can find these days. It is a wise idea, if you’re in bear country, to be aware of these animals and make sure to keep everything looked up, for the safety of both people and the bears.

What do you think of all the bear sightings and close calls the state has seen recently? Have you had a bear encounter up close and personal? Let us know in the comments!
