VIRGINIA BEACH — One city police officer is dead and another person was seriously injured in a shooting after a traffic stop Friday night, authorities said in a news release.

Very little information has been released.

It was not clear Saturday morning if the person injured in the shooting was a second officer or a potential suspect.

The incident began as a traffic stop at around 11:30 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Lynnhaven Parkway and Wendfield Drive, according to an email from Jody Saunders, a spokesperson for the police department.

“As you can imagine, our officers and detectives are working diligently to piece together the details” of the shooting, Saunders said in the email.

There is not believed to be an ongoing threat to the community, Saunders said.

No other information was provided.
