But when the field is narrowed to the busiest airports in North America, two Florida airports ranked in the top 10: Orlando International Airport and Miami International Airport, according to OAG's annual ranking of major airports.

If you just have to fly out of the world's busiest airport, you won't have far to go since Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was ranked No. 1. That makes it around a five-hour drive from Tallahassee or 228 miles by air.

Taking the No. 1 slot was no stranger to Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, which was also ranked as the busiest in the world in 2023 and 2019.

In 2024, it offered 62.7 million seats to travelers, surpassing No. 2 Dubai International Airport's 60.2 million seats.

“Atlanta’s continued global leadership reflects the airport’s strength as a major connecting hub for both domestic and international capacity, supported by a strong set of base airlines," OAG’s Chief Analyst John Grant said in a statement.

Dallas, Denver airports growing fast

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, DFW, and Denver International Airport, DEN, ranked fifth and sixth, respectively.

"Both airports surpassed their 2019 performance, with capacity increases of 18% at DFW and 24% at DEN, marking the highest growth among the top 10 airports," OAG said.

"Compared to 2023, DFW and DEN expanded their capacity by 7% and 5% more seats, respectively."

"Recent developments in both Dallas/Fort Worth and Denver highlight the competitive nature of the market in the United States, which results in choices for the connecting traveler market,” Grant said.

OAG said the top 10 busiest global airports in the world were calculated using total airline capacity, both domestic and international flights. The rankings are based on scheduled one-way airline capacity for the year 2024.
