ALEXANDRIA — When a fire breaks out, a car crash happens, or someone is in danger, it’s not just firefighters who respond — it’s neighbors.

The Alexandria Fire Department isn’t looking for superheroes; it’s looking for everyday people willing to step up for their community in moments that matter.

“We’re not looking for heroes — we’re looking for neighbors who are ready to help when their community needs them most. Being a volunteer firefighter isn’t about glory; it’s about service, dedication, and showing up for one another,” Fire Chief Jeff Karrow said in a press release.

Each year, the department answers around 200-225 calls, from house fires and vehicle rescues to fire safety education. Volunteers train every Monday night from 6-9 p.m. (dinner at 5:30 p.m.), gaining the skills to protect their community. It’s hard work, but the camaraderie and purpose make it worth it.

Beyond emergencies, firefighters are a part of the heartbeat of Alexandria. They attend 80+ community events each year — talking to kids at schools, showing up for fundraisers, and building connections with the people they serve. The annual Pork & Corn Feed and Fire Prevention Open House are just a couple of the ways they give back beyond the fire station.

Firefighting is about more than putting out flames. It’s about teamwork, trust, and knowing that when the call comes in, someone will be there. The Alexandria Fire Department is built on that promise.

It’s not about having special abilities — it’s about having the heart to serve. If you’re ready to be there for your neighbors, apply today at alexandriamn.city or stop by the station at 302 Fillmore St. in Alexandria.
