American Freight plans to close all of its 328 stores, including the Portage and Tinley Park locations.

The discount furniture, mattress and appliance retailer has a big-box store at 6169 U.S. 6 along Portage's main commercial drag and another at 16040 S. Harlem Ave. in south suburban Tinley Park.

American Freight already closed its store at 8000 Broadway in Merrillville about a year ago.

The company filed for bankruptcy and is looking to wind down all of its sales instead of just reorganize its debt.

Hilco Consumer-Retail is managing closing sales as American Freight winds down its operations across the country. It's now offering up to 30% discounts on products like refrigerators, washers, dryers, dining tables, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

"Our goal is to deliver outstanding value to customers during this full chain closing sale," said Hilco Consumer-Retail CEO Ian Fredericks. "Everything is on sale and must be sold, and we recommend shopping early for the best selection."

Ohio-based American Freight was founded in 1994 and grew to nearly 100 locations in 18 states. It was acquired by a private equity firm in 2014 and then merged in 2020 with the former Sears Outlet stores, which were rebranded as American Freight after the collapse of the iconic Sears retail chain.

The retailer sells a variety of furniture including sleepers, sectionals, beds, chairs, couches, runs and accents.

American Freight will close Indiana stores in Indianapolis, Evansville, Terre Haute, Fort Wayne, Mishawaka, Muncie, Lafayette, Bloomington, Clarksville, New Albany, Madison and Speedway. It's shuttering Illinois stores in Naperville, Fairview Heights, Broadview, Steamwood, McHenry, Darien, Peoria, Loves Park, Champagne and Decatur.
